Selection of Free Zone

Trusted guidance in selection of an appropriate free zone to meet your goals

start exploring

The UAE's free economic zones are specialized areas offering favorable conditions for international businesses. With over 40 zones, each operates under independent laws, focusing on different industries and providing unique advantages for business setup.

How to Select a Free Zone

01

Choose Type of Activity

You should start by selecting an activity to conduct to make sure that activity is licensed by one or another free zone. Determining your activities is important to choose a free zone that not only provides the necessary licensing for those activities but also offers the infrastructure to support the chosen activities in the most efficient way.

For instance, if the business specializes in air transportation and related services, proximity to Dubai International Airport and its state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure is essential. In such cases, the Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZ) is highly recommended, as it offers business licensing across more than 20 industries.

For some businesses, the availability of visa quotas is a critical consideration when choosing a free zone. For example, Meydan Free Zone provides up to 6 visa quotas without mandatory rental of a physical office, whereas many other free zones typically offer only around 3 visa quotas when you have a flexi-desk.

03

Determine Company’s Location & Physical Office

For a free zone that requires the rental of a physical office and does not provide a "virtual" office option, or if you plan to lease an office for your business operations in the UAE anyway, we recommend selecting a free zone with convenient location. Generally, the office should be within the free zone where the company is registered. However, Meydan Free Zone is an exception, permitting businesses to rent offices in mainland Dubai.

04

Decide Whether You Need Different Classes of Shares

For the purposes of your proposed capital structure you might need to have different classes of shares. However, not every free zone allows that, and you should then choose from the ones that do.

05

Allocate Your Time & Financial Resources

The speed of the registration process, associated fees, and office rental costs can vary greatly depending on the specific free zone you choose.
